Sounds of Summer 4th Concert

July 26, 2024 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

TONY TURNER TRIO

The Tony Turner Trio is Nanaimo-based acoustic based trio that perform original songs penned by Tony.  The trio consists of Tony Turner on acoustic guitar, harmonica and lead vocals, Arlene Carson on piano, accordion & supporting vocals and Joe Spinelli on upright bass. While anchored in the roots tradition, the trio’s repertoire has touches of blues and pop and the songs often have a twist of humour.

Tony Turner is a singer-songwriter and resident of Nanaimo, BC who for decades honed his song craft in the Ottawa folk scene. With a rich baritone singing voice and armed with his acoustic guitar and harmonica, Tony walks a thoughtful and sometimes sentimental or humorous musical path with his portraits of nature, working folks and modern life and times. Tony has recorded three albums of original compositions. A fourth album is in progress.

A writer with a social conscience, Tony’s concerts include both serious and tongue in cheek observations of current issues. 2015 was a banner year for Tony. His protest song Harperman became a YouTube hit, the centrepiece of political rallies across Canada, and garnered Tony an international Spirit of Folk award.  Then Tony’s much-loved anthem Circle of Song was published in Rise Again’, the sequel to the popular Rise Up Singing folk songbook.

In 2016, the Spirit of Tony Turner award named in his honour. Each year an individual in Tony’s former hometown, is awarded a “SofTTie” for the selfless giving of their time and talent to the help the Ottawa folk music community.
